summary: "SK Hynix's sevenfold profit jump drove MU up 4.8% and the SOX to a fourth straight gain, confirming the memory up-cycle on cash flow rather than sentiment, while a Houthi missile claim on Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura refinery lifted Brent back toward 15 and put IOC, BPCL and HINDPETRO under margin pressure as the Fed and the Bank of Canada tighten into it."

Three things are happening at once today and they pull in different directions: memory chips are in an up-cycle, crude is being repriced by a missile, and two central banks are tightening into it.

The reason to read them together is that all three transmit to the same Indian variables — the rupee, the import bill, and the discount rate on IT services.

## First: the memory cycle is real and it printed

**SK Hynix reported a more than sevenfold jump in quarterly profit, beating forecasts.** That single line re-rated the entire memory complex in the US session, and the moves are large enough to be worth quoting precisely: **Micron (MU) +4.8% to a two-week high**, **SK Hynix's US-listed shares +10.6%**, and the **Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) +0.9%, on track for a fourth consecutive up session**.

This is the most important sentence in the article: **the SOX is up for a fourth straight session, and memory led on earnings rather than on multiple expansion.** From July through mid-October this complex was sold on the argument that AI capex was debt-funded into a 4.99% ten-year. Memory pricing power is a cash-flow answer to that argument, not a sentiment answer.

| Stock | Impact | Reason | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| MU | 🟢 Positive | The direct read. A sevenfold profit jump at the competitor that sets memory pricing is the cleanest possible confirmation of the up-cycle, and MU is the US-listed pure play | 4/5 |
| NVDA, AVGO | 🟢 Positive | Memory and custom silicon ship into the same racks. A confirmed memory up-cycle is a demand signal for the accelerator complex | 3/5 |
| AMAT, ASML, TSM, MRVL | 🟢 Positive | Fourth straight up session for the SOX. Equipment and foundry orders follow memory capex by a quarter or two, which is the actual mechanism | 3/5 |
| AMD | 🟡 Watch | Participates in the read but competes with the memory-intensive accelerator business it is trying to take share in. Mixed | 2/5 |

## Second: Ras Tanura, and a premium that is being re-set by munitions

**Yemen's Houthis said on Tuesday they hit Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura refinery with a ballistic missile** — the kingdom's largest, with capacity of **550,000 barrels a day**, and a complex that includes a shipping terminal on the Gulf, west of the Strait of Hormuz. The group's military spokesperson said the strike caused a fire; Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm, and Bloomberg reported the fire near the terminal was contained.

The price response this morning: **Brent up about 1% to roughly $114.5-115.5 a barrel**, having settled at **$115.81 on Monday, down 91 cents (-0.8%)**, after touching $117. **WTI around $102, up more than 2%** from Monday's $101.76 settle.

The pattern through October is now well established and worth naming: **every diplomatic headline takes $2-4 off Brent, and every strike headline puts it back.** Monday's pullback was on reported high-level contact between Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials and Iran's leadership in Tehran. Tuesday's attack reversed it. Neither move was about supply and demand in the physical market.

For scale: Ras Tanura at 550,000 bpd is one day and a bit of what the market is pricing. The premium is not the lost barrels — it is the probability of the next strike.

| Stock | Impact | Reason | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| XOM, CVX, OXY, COP, EOG, SLB | 🟢 Positive | Upstream realisations and services activity both move with the crude complex, and the premium has a live catalyst rather than a fading one | 3/5 |
| DAL, UAL, AAL, LUV | 🔴 Negative | Jet fuel is the largest variable cost line and it is rising for a reason that does not resolve without a signed deal | 3/5 |
| CCL, RCL, NCLH | 🟡 Watch | Fuel is a genuine cost input; the offset is that cruise pricing has been strong enough to absorb it. Do not treat fuel alone as the thesis | 2/5 |

## Third: two central banks tightening on the same day

**The Bank of Canada raised its policy rate 25 basis points to 2.50% today — its first increase since July 2023, and its first policy move in a year — and said another hike is possible.** That is not a marginal event. It is a G7 central bank reversing a three-year easing bias in the same week that the Fed is expected to hold and signal December.

**The Fed decides at 2pm ET tonight, which is 11:30pm IST. No outcome is reported here because it has not happened.** A hold at 3.75%-4.00% is close to fully priced, with roughly 82% odds of a hike priced for December. The **US 10-year is at 4.99%**.

The transmission to India is mechanical and two-sided:

- **Higher US yields widen the pull on foreign capital.** FPI outflows are already at a record for the year.
- **A weaker rupee raises the local cost of the crude bill**, and the rupee is already at 95 to the dollar with visible RBI intervention.
- **Indian IT is priced off US demand and the discount rate**, which is why Nifty IT fell 2.43% today while the SOX rose.

## Big Tech reports tonight, and the bar is unusual

**Alphabet and Microsoft report after the close tonight; Amazon follows on Thursday.** More than a third of the S&P 500 reports this week.

The set-up is not the usual "beat and raise" template. **The Magnificent Seven are up 8.2% year to date against 12.6% for the S&P 500 and 17.6% for the Nasdaq-100** — the group that drove the index for two years is now a drag on it. Jefferies has flagged Mag 7 earnings growth at around 21% against 32% for the rest of the index.

Against that, sentiment improved sharply this week after **Anthropic filed its S-1 on Monday** for a Nasdaq listing under ANT, disclosing steep losses alongside rapid revenue growth. The Nasdaq has added about 2% this week.

| Stock | Impact | Reason | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| GOOGL | 🟢 Positive | Up 1.2% today on a report that OpenAI plans to buy Google's AI chips. That is a customer relationship for the TPU business, and it reports tonight | 3/5 |
| MSFT, AMZN | 🟡 Watch | Both report within 48 hours with capex guidance as the swing factor. The market has stopped rewarding spend and started asking for the return on it | 3/5 |
| META | 🟡 Watch | Raised its equity fundraising to $97.5 billion with Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom showing up to $5 billion of interest. Equity-funded capex moves the risk from the credit market to the register, which is not the same as reducing it | 2/5 |

## India transmission, kept separate

| Stock | Impact | Reason | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| IOC, BPCL, HINDPETRO | 🔴 Negative | Brent near $115 with a live supply catalyst is an import-bill, working-capital and marketing-margin problem, arriving alongside a rupee at 95 | 3/5 |
| ONGC, OIL | 🟢 Positive | Upstream realisations rise with Brent, though the subsidy-sharing mechanics blunt the pass-through | 3/5 |
| TCS, INFY, HCLTECH, COFORGE, PERSISTENT | 🟡 Watch | **The reverse-AI trade did not fire today and should not be called.** Nifty IT fell 2.43% on a day the SOX rose 0.9% — the July rotation pattern needs a chip crash, and chips are up four sessions running | 2/5 |
| RELIANCE | 🟡 Watch | Refining margins benefit from a wide crude complex while the petrochemical side suffers from feedstock cost. Jio Platforms listed at a 21.4% premium and the parent still fell 3.5% today | 2/5 |

One honest note on the tape: **this article is written with the US session open.** The Nasdaq was marginally lower at 10:01am ET (26,470.68, -7.13) while the Dow was up 73.40 points at 52,450.97 and the S&P up 6.10 at 7,729.20. There is no US close to report today, and the Fed decision, Alphabet and Microsoft all land after this is published.
