summary: "The RBI allotted only 50,006 crore against 1.62 lakh crore of bids at Thursday's VRR with the liquidity surplus down to 542 crore, a squeeze that favours BAJFINANCE and CHOLAFIN on funding cost while SEBI's early-pay-in margin waiver supports BSE and ANGELONE."

The Reserve Bank has now injected roughly ₹1.5 lakh crore in three sessions and the banking system's liquidity surplus is still almost exactly zero. That is not a central bank managing a market. That is a central bank refilling a bucket with the tap still running.

**At Thursday's overnight variable rate repo auction the RBI notified ₹50,000 crore, received bids worth ₹1.62 lakh crore — more than three times the amount on offer — and allotted ₹50,006 crore at a weighted average rate of 5.55%.** Banking-system liquidity surplus has shrunk to roughly **₹541.95 crore**.

The sequence across the week matters more than the single auction:

- **October 19** — seven-day VRR for ₹1 lakh crore, bids ₹1,50,735 crore, accepted **₹1,00,014 crore at 5.52%**. This was the first infusion since July 29.
- **October 21** — overnight VRR, bids ₹93,241 crore, allotted **₹50,007 crore**.
- **October 22** — overnight VRR, bids ₹1.62 lakh crore, allotted **₹50,006 crore at 5.55%**.

## Why Bids at Three Times the Offer Is the Signal, Not the Comfort

Under normal conditions a VRR auction that is heavily oversubscribed tells you banks have collateral and want duration. Here it tells you something narrower: **the weighted average call rate has been trading above the 5.50% repo**, touching 5.67% on Monday, 17 basis points over the policy rate, and at the marginal standing facility at the end of last week. When the operating target is breached from above, the RBI's choice is to inject or to let the call rate drift.

It is choosing to inject. That is the correct read — and it is also the reason this is neutral for valuations rather than positive. The money is restoring the operating target, not adding stimulus.

The structural cause is the absorption cycle that ran from August 6 after the FCNR(B) swap window. Average daily net absorption went from about ₹1.2 lakh crore in July to ₹5.8 lakh crore in August to ₹7.8 lakh crore in September, and daily CRR was tightened effective October 16. The system has been drained, and the drain is now being reversed in ₹50,000 crore instalments.

## Banks and Rate-Sensitives

| Stock | Impact | Reason | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDFCBANK, ICICIBANK, KOTAKBANK, AXISBANK | 🟡 Watch | ⚠️ inferred. A call rate pinned above repo is mildly supportive for marginal liability pricing, but repeated emergency-style injections signal a funding market that is tighter than the policy rate implies | 3/5 |
| SBIN, BANKBARODA, PNB | 🟡 Watch | ⚠️ inferred. Public-sector banks are the largest direct users of the VRR window; access is not the issue, cost is | 2/5 |
| BAJFINANCE, CHOLAFIN, LICHSGFIN, MUTHOOTFIN, MANAPPURAM | 🟢 Positive | ⚠️ inferred. The infusion relieves the wholesale funding cost that transmits fastest into NBFC borrowing; this is the cleanest beneficiary of the reversal if it continues | 3/5 |

The honest caveat: if the RBI has to keep doing ₹50,000 crore overnight auctions into November, that is a liquidity problem dressed as an operation, and the festive-season credit demand will make it worse before it gets better.

## Second: SEBI waived margin on repeat trades after early pay-in

**SEBI issued a circular on October 22 titled "Margin Waiver on Subsequent Buy/Sell Transactions Post Early Pay-In (EPI) in Cash Segment."** Investors who deliver securities early now get margin relief when they transact again in the same scrip.

This is small, technical, and directionally pro-volume. Early pay-in has been an underused mechanic precisely because the margin benefit stopped at the first transaction; extending it to subsequent trades makes the delivery-based workflow cheaper for anyone running a repeat or rolling position.

| Stock | Impact | Reason | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSE, ANGELONE, MOTILALOFS | 🟢 Positive | ⚠️ inferred. Lower friction on delivery-based cash-market activity supports turnover, which is the revenue line for exchanges and brokers | 3/5 |
| CDSL, KFINTECH, CAMS | 🟡 Watch | ⚠️ inferred. Depository and registrar volumes move with delivery intensity; the effect here is incremental, not structural | 2/5 |

## Third: Jio's IPO is at 4.26 times on day two

**Jio Platforms' ₹30,213 crore offering was subscribed 4.26 times by 2:45pm on day two**, against 19.75 crore shares on offer, with the grey market premium at about 22%. The qualified institutional portion was 9.42 times and the non-institutional portion 1.87 times. Allotment is tentatively October 26 and listing October 28.

| Stock | Impact | Reason | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| RELIANCE | 🟢 Positive | Named issuer parent. A successful ₹30,213 crore raise at a ~₹10.3 lakh crore valuation is direct value crystallisation for the parent | 4/5 |
| BSE, ANGELONE, MOTILALOFS, CDSL, KFINTECH, CAMS | 🟢 Positive | ⚠️ inferred. India's largest-ever issue pulling in this level of participation is a market-structure revenue event across listing, broking and registrar fees | 3/5 |

## The Close

**The Sensex fell 460.30 points, or 0.62%, to 73,249.39 and the Nifty 50 lost 123.70 points, or 0.54%, to 22,687.65.**

The damage was concentrated. **Nifty FMCG fell 1.74% to 42,962.00 and Nifty IT fell 1.31% to 31,996.80**, both giving back part of Wednesday's sharp IT-led rally. Media was weak. **Bank Nifty was almost flat, down 0.09% to 54,925.70**, and automobiles were the one sector that held, up about 1%.

The drivers were external rather than domestic: crude above $110, a broad Asian sell-off with the Hang Seng down 3.03% and the Nikkei down 2.7%, and the oil-to-rupee transmission that follows. There was no fresh domestic policy trigger to blame, and it would be wrong to manufacture one.

## Tomorrow

**Infosys reports Q2 FY27 after market hours on October 23.** Consensus is for constant-currency revenue growth of 1.5-1.7% quarter on quarter, EBIT margin of 21-21.6%, and a likely trim to FY27 guidance. Nuvama expects a cut to 1.0-2.5% constant currency from 1.5-3%. The stock rose 3.30% on Wednesday into the print, along with HCLTech at 3.21%, Tech Mahindra at 3.13% and TCS at 2.77% — that is a sector that has already priced a decent quarter.
