PM Inaugurates India Mobile Congress 2026: 6G Leadership, a Global Cyber-Fraud Framework, and USD 15 Billion of BharatNet

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the 10th India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi on Thursday, October 8, the four-day event running October 7-10 under the theme "Scale Without Boundaries" with participation from over 100 countries. He was received by Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

What the Prime Minister said:

  • 5G has reached every district, with more than 5.5 lakh 5G base stations deployed and mobile internet speeds up tenfold since 2022, when the rollout began.
  • He called for a global framework to counter cyber fraud and deepfakes: "Cybercriminals do not recognise borders. A person sitting in one country can commit a crime in a third country, using resources from a second country." He asked the GSMA and telecom operators worldwide to build a mechanism that stops fraud before it reaches the people, and said technology "can achieve scale only when it gains people's trust."
  • On the next technologies: 6G, artificial intelligence, semiconductor production, cybersecurity and advanced digital infrastructure are the stated priorities, alongside domestic manufacturing of mobile phones and telecom equipment.

What the Communications Minister put on the record the same session:

  • India aims to double its 5G user base from 550 million to one billion by 2030.
  • The Bharat 6G Alliance has 90 institutions involved and has established 7,700 patents, of which 4,400 are international. Scindia: "We were behind the world in 4G. We marched with the world on 5G. But it is our resolve that we will lead the world on 6G."
  • The ITU Council has accepted India's proposal to host the Plenipotentiary Conference in 2030.
  • Broadband customers have grown from 60 million to over 1.1 billion; India now has 1.35 billion mobile connections. One gigabyte of data has fallen from ₹268 in 2014 to ₹8 — the cheapest in the world.
  • UPI accounts for 84% of India's digital transactions and 49% of the world's, processing 260 billion transactions a year worth USD 3.4 trillion, with the technology taken to 11 other countries.
  • The USD 15 billion government-funded BharatNet programme will provide middle-mile connectivity to close to 2.6 lakh gram panchayats and on-demand connectivity to the remaining 3.8 lakh villages, with a 100 Mbps connection to every home.
  • The mobile phone industry has grown from USD 2-3 billion in 2014 to USD 63 billion; India is the world's second-largest mobile phone producer and exports are close to USD 29 billion.

The Prime Minister Amplified a Space-Sector Self-Reliance Article by Digantara's Founders

On October 8 the PMO published the Prime Minister's share of an article by Anirudh Sharma and Tanveer Ahmed, founders of Digantara — described in the release as a global space intelligence and defence company — highlighting India's move towards self-reliance in space technologies where it was once dependent on other countries.

  • The PMO's framing on X: India is "moving rapidly towards self-reliance and developing capabilities in areas where it was once dependent on other countries", and is strengthening its presence in the world through new space technologies.
  • The release carries no procurement, no contract value and no named listed counterparty.

Inference disclosure (Rule 6): the release names Digantara, which is private and unlisted — it must never be used as a ticker. The space-sector names below are inferred from India's listed space supply chain, not from anything in this release.

  • The Prime Minister shared a second October 8 article, by Minister of State Jitendra Singh, on India's Blue Economy — ocean resources, coastal infrastructure and maritime trade.
  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu met the Prime Minister in New Delhi on October 8. Andhra Pradesh is a core node in India's electronics and semiconductor build-out, but no specific project or investment was announced in the release.
  • October 8 was also Air Force Day, which the Prime Minister marked in his IMC address.

Inference disclosure (Rule 6): none of these three items names a company, a contract or a rupee amount. The mappings below are sector-level inferences only.

Market Context: A Brutal Session for Indian Equities While the Policy Calendar Runs Hot

The Nifty 50 closed at 22,231.80, down 371.25 points or 1.64%, its lowest close since April 2025, and the Sensex fell 1,045.46 points or 1.44% to 71,593.24 — with all 11 NSE sectoral indices in the red and India VIX up more than 10%. The fall followed Wednesday's RBI repo hike to 5.50% on a switch to a "calibrated tightening" stance, plus Brent above USD 104 and a ninth straight session of foreign selling.

  • Three of 30 Sensex constituents closed higher — Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank and Infosys. ITC, IndiGo, Power Grid and BEL fell more than 3% each; Adani Ports, NTPC, Reliance and Maruti were among the other large laggards.
  • Nifty Metal fell 3.55%, with every constituent lower — its steepest single-day fall since March 23, 2026.

BHARTIARTL, IDEA, INDUSTOWER🟡 Watch⚠️ inferred. The event content is constructive, but the near-term tape is hostile: rate-sensitive and high-multiple telecom is exposed to both the RBI stance and the crude-driven inflation impulse3/5
ITC, HINDUNILVR, NESTLEIND🔴 NegativeConsumer staples and FMCG were sold hard in this session, with ITC down 4.03%; the de-rating reflects imported input costs and a weaker consumption outlook, not the day's policy flow3/5
DIXON, KAYNES, AMBER, SYRMA, CGPOWER🟡 Watch⚠️ inferred. The manufacturing roadmap is intact, but these names carry high multiples into a rising-rate environment; sector momentum and policy direction are pointing in opposite directions today3/5
INFY, TECHM, AXISBANK🟢 PositiveThe only three Sensex gainers on a day when foreign selling hit almost everything else; IT services is behaving as the defensive rotation within Indian equities3/5
